SUPAGLASS PROTECTS DRIVER IN DRAMATIC BRANDS HATCH CRASH

Colin Blair recently hit the 'kitty litter' at Paddock Hill bend, Brands Hatch, at around 100 mph. He was going sideways at the time, so the breaking effect of the gravel flipped his Alfa Romeo 156 twice before it came to a stop - fortunately right-side up. He was amazed and relieved to see that the side and rear windows had 'crazed' but not broken. That was because they had just been fitted with SupaGlass.

Colin drives for G.A. Janspeed Racing and was taking part in the Production Class of the British Touring Car Championship. He was doing 110 mph when the Honda he was trying to pass hit his rear end and Colin was unable to hold the sideways slide. 'I was aware of all the windows starting to craze when the car was going over due to the pressure on the roof,' he said.

The driver's door flew off before the car finally came to a halt but Colin was amazed to see that the rear window simply fell in. 'It was really weird: it fell in but it was still intact.'

A nasty accident, but one which Colin walked away from. He was impressed by SupaGlass. 'At the end of the day, safety is paramount in motor racing,' he said. 'So anything that can give you that slight edge with it comes to a crash has to be beneficial.

'It was very important that during the roll through Paddock Hill the glass stayed intact. I have been in cars before where the glass goes everywhere and it only needs a small shard to take your eye out.

Another problem is that if you're upside-down and the glass goes the gravel starts to make quite a mess of you. I have known racing drivers lose teeth because of stones hitting them in the mouth. Also, the glass staying in one piece meant that less gravel got into the cabin when I was rolling, even though the door came off.'

Colin has cause to be grateful to SupaGlass, although he has no immediate plans to repeat the experience! And it all ended well. G.A. Janspeed Racing went on to win the 6th round of the British Production Class at Oulton Park.
