1. What is SupaGlass?
SupaGlass is a very strong polyester laminate that is professionally bonded to the inside of a vehicle's side windows. It is optically clear and practically invisible. It holds the glass fragments together when the window is broken and hence provides significant safety and security benefits, protecting occupants in the event of an accident whilst helping to resist thieves and car-jackers.
2. What happens when a window is broken?
Normally when a window is broken, the inside of the vehicle will be showered with glass. Although these "toughened glass" particles are designed to be much safer than normal glass, which is why they are often referred to as safety glass, occupants within a vehicle can still be covered in glass pieces. Glass fragments can in some circumstances be breathed in or can get into eyes, causing severe discomfort or injury.
In the event that a thief is attacking a vehicle, the easiest way into a locked car is to shatter a side glass. Apart from having access to valuables, the mess that the glass makes once broken is well known and highly inconvenient.
3. What increased personal safety does SupaGlass offer?
SupaGlass is designed to make driving safer. In the event of a serious accident or side impact, SupaGlass will help to retain all of the glass fragments of a shattered window in one sheet and prevent occupants from being covered in glass particles.
In the event of attack by a car-jacker, SupaGlass also helps to protect occupants from harm. Modern immobilisers are so good now that this type of horrific crime is on the increase.
During a roll-over incident, SupaGlass is designed to help keep occupants inside the vehicle, even when the glass shatters.
4. How does SupaGlass make my vehicle more secure?
92% of criminal vehicle entries are through the side glass. SupaGlass is designed to resist thieves by holding the glass firmly in place even when it is shattered and making it much very difficult to break through even with punching, kicking or using heavy instruments. Smash and grab accounts for the vast majority of break-ins and it is against this that SupaGlass is especially effective at combating.
In the event of a car-jacking, it is almost impossible to gain entry to the vehicle with SupaGlass, thus securing the occupants, vehicle and their valuables too.
5. How is SupaGlass fitted?
SupaGlass has to be professionally fitted ( in order to ensure performance and quality of finish) in a Pentagon Workshop so that our professional technicians can work in environmentally controlled conditions. SupaGlass is generally fitted only to the side windows of a car, but can be fitted to the front or rear screen on request.
Normally the drop glass (moving windows) are removed from the car to have SupaGlass fitted right to the edges of the glass to provide maximum performance. SupaGlass is also fitted to fixed glass such as quarter lights or rear cargo windows and is further "anchored" with a high strength adhesive sealant.
6. How much does SupaGlass cost?
Depends largely on the type of vehicle and the time it takes to fit. Prices start at £295.
7. How long does SupaGlass take to fit?
48 hours including drying, quality checking and any refitting that may be required.
8. Is it Bullet proof / Missile proof / 100% guaranteed to resist attack?
Although it is believed that SupaGlass does provide some additional resistance to projectiles in certain circumstances, we make no claims whatsoever about ballistic performance of the product. SupaGlass is highly effective not 100% effective, very few things in life are. For example, a sustained attack from a large axe will penetrate the window.
9. What health benefits does SupaGlass offer?
Clear and tinted SupaGlass will eliminate over 99% of harmful UV rays, helping the human body resist skin cancer and other UV threats. Tinted SupaGlass is also an excellent way to reduce heat discomfort and glare especially affecting children, DVD screens, passengers and pets. Overall reductions in the inside temperature assist passenger and driver comfort and therefore health and safety.
10. What warranty does SupaGlass have?
SupaGlass has a no quibble lifetime guarantee for as long as you own the vehicle.
11. Will I be trapped in the vehicle by SupaGlass?
No. Using a glass-break hammer ( but from the inside only ) it is relatively easy to break a window that has been treated with SupaGlass.
In the event that glass treated with SupaGlass is shattered in an accident, it is relatively straightforward to push the window out from inside the vehicle. You are also pushing against smooth plastic not shards of glass. The key is that the SupaGlass film is applied to the inside face of the glass - when shattered, pressure on the glass from outside of the vehicle compresses the fractured glass particles whereas pushing out from inside you are separating the particles. Try pushing your finger into an egg from the outside, it is very difficult whereas from the inside out it is easy.
The emergency services are not limited either by SupaGlass - in the event of an accident, SupaGlass reduces injury from flying glass whilst the Fire and Ambulance Services know how to access occupants in a vehicle without being hindered by windows treated with SupaGlass. The Fire and Ambulance services are some of our biggest SupaGlass customers!
12. Does SupaGlass scratch, mark or need special care?
No. SupaGlass has a very tough scratch resistant coating. Needless to say however, care is needed to ensure that razor sharp objects ( like diamonds) or those capable of normally marking glass don't come into contact. Any decent glass cleaner will suffice.
13. Why can't other companies fit SupaGlass?
Beware of cheap and useless imitations! SupaGlass is made to our specification for our exclusive Pentagon use. It is 300 microns thick, some other so called security films are 100 microns thick. We bond the SupaGlass in properly and we are the only SupaGlass company accredited with an ISO 9001/ 2000 quality rating, a Thatcham Q lisiting and are approved - after much scrutiny - to offer SupaGlass under the officially approved banner of Mercedes Benz, Audi and Volkswagen (amongst many others). Pentagon SupaGlass has been recommended in Autocar, "highly commended" as a Security Product by What Car? and raved about in virtually every major car magazine in the country.
14. My glass is already laminated!
Although tougher, laminated glass 'spalls' during impact, creating lethal daggers of broken glass that can do major harm to soft human flesh. SupaGlass combined with laminated glass offers highly effective protection against this spalling.
15. 'Ejection mitigation'?
According to recent figures published in the USA by the National Highway Traffic Survey Administration, 30% of fatal accidents involve total or partial ejection from a vehicle of one or more occupants. 50% of all ejections (normally during a roll-over incident) are through the front side windows. Ejection Mitigation is a measure of the ability of a vehicle to resist occupants from being thrown from a vehicle during a serious accident or roll-over incident. The recent coach crash on the M25 has graphically shown the horrific result of these 'ejections'.
SupaGlass in combination with toughened glass is designed to hold shattered glass together in one piece and thereby to resist the possibility of ejection. When fitted to a vehicle, SupaGlass therefore helps to reduce substantially the risks of injury or fatality that are associated with ejection during a serious accident and / or roll-over.
16. Can I or anyone else tell if SupaGlass is fitted?
Not really, there are tell-tale signs to the expert eye but in most cases, due to the quality of fitment, you ( or a criminal) can't tell. SupaGlass works best as a "covert" product that helps to resist opportunist thieves when they do attack. Our usual experiences show that criminals will attack SupaGlass vehicles and then give up. We don't use stickers either, pre-warning thieves about security measures can also assist them to understand the best way to break into a car.
